Preventative Care
Preventative Care

Our preventive program is a cooperative effort by you, Dr. Tanzil and our dental team to preserve your natural dentition by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions.

Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is continued in the dental office by the efforts of Dr. Tanzil and your dental hygienist through regular check-ups, cleanings, x-rays and oral examinations. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect your teeth.

Prevention helps avoid serious and costly dental problems and is the key to having a healthy, confident and beautiful smile for a lifetime!

Periodontal Disease
Periodontal Disease

People used to think that as you got older you naturally lost your teeth. We now know that’s not true. By following easy steps for keeping your teeth and gums healthy and seeing your dentist regularly, you can keep your teeth for a lifetime!

What is periodontal or gum disease? Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection. Without proper dental care, the bacteria that are present in plaque can infect the gums (gingivitis) and destroy the bone and tissues that support the teeth in what is called periodontitis– the leading cause of tooth loss and bad breath (halitosis) in adults. In addition, gum disease has been linked to more serious health threats such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and pre-term, low-birth weight babies. Relax while we look after your smile.

Symptoms of Gum Disease:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or separating teeth

To prevent gum disease, it is important to follow proper dental care and oral hygiene techniques that include daily brushing and flossing and to see Dr. Tanzil and Dr. Yip at least twice a year for professional cleanings and examinations.

A beautiful smile will improve your confidence, make you look younger, and give you the “edge” you need to take that next step in your life. Having teeth that look great and allow you to eat whatever you want is a life-changing event.

Teeth Whitening

Your smile is important. It’s one of the first things people notice about you when you meet them. A whiter, brighter, beautiful smile can help you feel better about yourself and make a memorable first impression. Your lifestyle and the aging process can stain and darken your teeth. Many things we do on a regular basis can contribute to stained teeth, such as drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine or smoking.

Zoom! In Office Whitening

We offer Zoom!® In-Office Whitening to dramatically whiten your teeth. Zoom is safe, effective and very fast. In just one hour, your teeth will be amazingly whiter. The convenience of Zoom! in comparison to days of using strips or wearing trays makes it the perfect choice for the busy individual.

Take-Home Whitening

Another alternative to whiten your teeth is “home whitening”. You will receive a custom-made bleaching tray, as well as the whitening gel so that you can do the whitening in the comfort of your home. This treatment usually consists of one application for 30 minutes per day for 2 weeks.

Crowns and Bridges

Crown and bridgework involves the restoration of your natural teeth that have been damaged, decayed or lost. Crowns and bridges can correct missing teeth, bite dysfunction, functional or structural problems. A crown can restore an individual damaged tooth back to its original form and function, while a bridge can replace one or more teeth. These restorations are cemented onto the teeth and are referred to as “fixed” dentistry rather than using a removable appliance or partial denture.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Also known as composite fillings, white fillings are designed to match the color of your teeth. They can be used to restore a decayed tooth or repair a defect. Although they are often used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, they may also be used on back teeth.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelein veneers are the perfect way to transform your smile into one you can feel proud to wear. Veneers can help to correct natural occurrences such a crooked and stained teeth as well as damaged or worn teeth into a healthier, whiter and more confident smiles. Veneers are handcrafted to create beautiful porcelain coverings for individual teeth. They are as strong as your own natural teeth yet they will not discolour, chip or fracture over time. Porcelain veneers will successfully treat gaps, chips, excessively small or large teeth, and discoloured or “antibiotic” stained teeth.

Implant Dentistry
Implant Dentistry

DON’T BE ALARMED – People lose teeth all the time.

Trauma, decay, gum disease or old age being the most common culprits. Whatever the reason for losing your teeth, they need to be replaced, both for aesthetic and functional reasons. The best restorative option are dental implants, as they provide a longer-term solution, slow down bone loss and preserve nearby healthy tooth tissue. Dental implants are artificial, titanium tooth roots that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jawbone and allowed to heal for three to six months.

Traditionally, an implant placed into your bone supports a single crown and this is know as a “single tooth implant”. However, if you have several missing teeth, you do not necessarily need an implant for every missing tooth: one implant can support several teeth via a bridge or denture. The number of implants required depends on the volume and density of bone tissue available at each implant site. Often, smaller-sized implants are used to secure dentures in place.

Tooth Decay
Tooth Decay

prevent tooth decay with good oral hygiene and a proper diet.

Tooth decay is the destruction of the enamel (outer surface) of a tooth. Tooth decay occurs when three factors are present: bacteria, sugar, and a weak tooth surface. The acid that decays the teeth is produced by bacteria living in plaque, a soft and sticky substance that accumulates on the teeth from the foods we eat. Most bacteria consume sugar and starches. If you eat less sugary foods and drinks (soda, candy, milk, and even fruits and vegetables), less acid will be produced in the mouth.

It is a good idea to regularly visit Dr. Tanzil & Dr. Yip, as plaque if not removed, can harden into a substance known as tartar. A dentist or dental hygienist can only remove tartar during a professional cleaning. The main symptom of tooth decay is pain. Pain worsens if you drink hot or cold drinks or breathe in cold air. A person with teeth cavities has foul breath and bad taste in the mouth. The teeth become sensitive and break easily. When a cavity or filling has become very large, Root Canal Treatment is sometimes recommended. During the Root Canal Treatment, the roots of the tooth are cleaned of any decay or bacteria. A filling is placed from the roots of the tooth to the top of the tooth and a crown is usually recommended.

Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry

SLEEP THROUGH ANY DENTAL VISIT AND WAKE UP WITH A BRAND NEW SMILE.

If you are afraid to go to the dentist, sedation dentistry can change your life for the better. You won’t feel any discomfort and likely won’t remember the treatment itself. Multiple dental procedures can also be completed in a single visit, including:

  • Wisdom Teeth Removal
  • Dental Implant Placement
  • Replacing crowns or dentures
  • Fixing chipped or damaged teeth
  • Restoring sore gums to good health

Twilight anesthesia (IV or conscious sedation) is a type of anesthetic technique in which you are sedated, but not entirely asleep. It is used for a variety of dental procedures and is designed to make apprehensive patients feel more comfortable while minimizing the pain associated with the procedure being performed. The technique carries fewer risks than general anesthesia, making it a popular choice among patients.

The anesthesia also creates a state of amnesia so that you will not remember the procedure later. Many of the drugs used to induce twilight anesthesia are the same as those used in general anesthesia, but the dosages are much lower. Dr. Mey Tanzil is a certified conscious sedation practitioner.

Children can also benefit from sedation. For the very apprehensive child, oral sedation or Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) may help. The dental treatment can be completed once the child has fallen asleep. This less intimidating way of relaxing children helps with their apprehension and makes future dental visits more enjoyable.

In addition to helping people with anxiety and fear, sedation dentistry offers an effective solution for people with special needs. As an example, some patients have a sensitive gag reflex, or difficulty keeping their mouth open for extended periods of time
